Study Time

The mothers are now volunteering at SPICES as teacher aids.
This is fourth time.
During study time, SL has to take short pencil, the shadow aid teacher is holding eraser. He has got four worksheets to finish. Addition, copy-write, true-false short sentence and fill in missing words.
He writes his name and date. Sometimes he scribbles right from the beginning. Then he asks for eraser. If he rubs, he will rub and he will rub. That is the reason why he should not hold the erase. The teacher would erase the scribbles. He writes. He throws pencil. Teacher picks up pencil. He throws pencil. Teacher picks up pencil from every corner he throws.
He then screams, shake the chair, he starts crying. He says, `I want to sleep’.
This will carry on for forty five minutes. Teacher has to stand in front of him, pointing each question to guide him through. At the same times, picking up pencil, erasing scribbles and repeating, `you can scream, but still have to finish homework’.
Tell him eye ball to eye ball, `If SL scribbles again, I am not going to rub. You write on dirty paper’.
The teacher never asks him to pick up the pencil or tell him do not throw pencil.
I guess two things SPICES doing is insist finishing homework. This is to achieve one thing at a time. This is not time to discipline and never reinforce by telling the negative things that you do not want him to do.

Vomitting

The mothers are volunteering at SPICES as teacher for special children every Tuesday & Friday (2-1/2hr each) starting this month.

What is different from normal routine?
Yesterday Rini was with us, she told SL, `Hari ini kakak ikut ke SPICES. ‘ . We were 20 minutes early, as I was busy preparing homework for next Tuesday, SL seems extremely exciting. He was running, laughing, talking insignificant words, beating me (same as last Tuesday after class while I was preparing homework*). Time was 1:45pm.

Five minutes before class started, I stopped my work. I pulled him face to face. He touched my name tag-Teacher P Y. I said, today, this is teacher P Y.*

Throwing up
At 3:45pm, gross motor time, we played musical chairs, as usual, he run everywhere in stead of around the chairs. After that, we did some stretching exercise followed by snack time. Just before snack time, I notice his face turns pale and pain, then he moaned and started throwing up saliva and phlegm then food. We left SPICES before the class finish. Half way walking to the car, he looked like dizzy; I carried him, he is usually strong. He vomits again in the car before engine start, yellowish throw up. On the way home, he vomits, tired, sleepy, pale, quiet and soft.

At grand parent house, after vomit, he drunk ½ glass warm water, throw up. We went to clinic near by, he can’t walk. I carried him a distance. Doctor was standing outside, he checked the eye, immediately said, B.Y., don’t waste time, go hospital now. Time was 4:45pm.

In the hospital
On the way to Tawakal, he vomits lips turn dark, pale and sleepy. We drove in emergency; he lay in observation room, sleepy but don’t go to sleep, nurse took temperature, check eyes, check nails. No attention given under he start to vomit again. 10 or 15 minutes later, doctor came to see him, S L can’t tell is the stomachache, the doctor checked stomach it is soft and rumbling. The doctor said it is not serious, may be wind, give medicine (colic drops and promethazine-5), and observe for 6 hours if getting worse only start giving drips for dehydration. The paleness is normal symptoms. (But the clinic said could be lack of oxygen, giving drips immediately may help to avoid fever afterwards) The doctor don’t admit him because no bed and worry of infection (H1N1 period). Consultation fees RM25 + medicine and disposable total RM47.

He vomits small amount (dirty one handkerchief) two times in the hospital, once in the car on the way back from hospital.

Recovering
I gave him water using tea spoon, 2 to 3 tea spoon at a time. I gave him medicine, he went to sleep. Less than ½ hours later, he wakes up with high fever at 39.2 C. The lower lip is red and tender again. He didn’t vomit anymore after given medicine.

Poro suppository 250mg was given at 9:30pm when we reached home. The fever subsides later. He sleeps through the night.

This morning he woke up late, bread and plain water for breakfast. He plays train toys.

For Future reference
1. Tell him change of routine before it happens.
2. give attention to him when he needs it (beat me or react excessively)
3. Avoid over reacting of spinning (causing imbalance ear drum)
4. go to one stop (hospital) if already unusual pale and want to faint (Dr.Lim said)
5. If fainted, lay side way, right side of the body on floor to avoid throw up get into lung. Rub his left chest for heart and call his name.
